Creative storage ideas for sewing supplies?
I have yarn and sewing supplies out the wazoo, they end up getting transfered from one box in the corner to another box in the corner and all mixed up – my closets are full. what have you done to address such a problem that you’ve had?
Sounds like it might be time for some stash reduction. Figure out how you want to store stuff (small drawers are great for threads and needles, but useless for big lengths of fabrics) so you’re going to want several kinds of storage, most likely.
How do you work? Do you actually complete a project if you “kit it up”, gathering all necessary supplies for one project and putting those all together in a container of some sort to be worked on? Or do you work best if you have everything visible so you can select as you decide what you’re making?
Dump everything out and start sorting. Look at the stuff honestly: are you really going to do anything with those 1″ fake jewel buttons that came in the buttons you wanted but you had to buy a whole ziplock bag full of miscellaneous to get? If not, sort the stuff you’re never going to use out and rehome it… ASG, your knitting group, scout groups, local schools or recreation programs that teach sewing; craft supplies, therapeutic craft programs at local mental hospitals or prisons, freecycle… now, doesn’t that feel good to have that out of the house? Same thing with the yarn and fabric: that creepy acrylic stuff you bought as a beginner… the brown that doesn’t look like anything in your wardrobe…. get ‘em gone. Yes, you paid for it, but it’s not doing you any good at all and it’s just getting in the way of doing what you want. Chalk it up to “mental health” and get it out of the house.
Big stuff that you’ve got a lot of can be cataloged with digital camera or scrap book before being put in compact storage. You can measure the fabric, take a photo of the fabric with the measurements on the photo and then note which box you’re putting it in. For stuff like sewing patterns, scan or digitally photograph the front and back of the pattern, and file the patterns in numerical order.
You can pull a few inches out of each kind of yarn you have and make a tag noting the yardage and fiber content and make yourself a sample book so the yarn can go in compact storage.
I don’t knit any more… gave that up because I had other stuff I preferred to do, so I really just have to deal with sewing storage. Instead of cataloging I have three main types of storage: fabrics on a roll; fabrics on a bolt (often stuff like linings) and cut fabrics. The cut fabrics are organized in laundry baskets, rolled and standing on end. All of the fabric in laundry baskets are intended for a particular person I sew for. I may further subdivide this… that basket may be full of shirt fabric, this one with pants fabric; the third one with outerwear and sweater fabric. That works for me, but it may not work for you.
Watch the scrap situation. Any quilt weight fabrics I have remnants of from cutting out a garment, I immediately cut into 2.5, 3, 4, or 6″ squares and place in bags with the square size written on them. When I get a goodly handful, I turn them over to a local gentleman who makes quilts for kids in foster care,
Think about how you work. Then design a system for yourself that works for you. But don’t forget to weed.
Also consider a stash moratorium for awhile. Set yourself a goal of sewing from stash only for a few months. Or knitting from stash only for a few months, and during that time, you won’t buy any more materials. That can be an interesting and creative design challenge, too.
