You must only purchase the best quality product even if it is expensive because you have to use it for many years.

2. Band Saw

Band saw2 is another very useful and versatile tool that should surely be present in your wood shop. It can be used for various things like re cutting, cross cutting, for cutting the joints, ripping wood and for cutting the wood into circles. Many people are not totally aware of the various uses of band saw but if you know it’s great functions then you would just love to purpose it. It is easily available in stores all around the world.

3. Measuring tools

Your projects can never be completed unless and until you have good measuring tools. It is used for measuring the exact size and length of the wood when you are creating wood patterns. A wood stick ruler and a measuring tape come under the category of measuring tools and they can really help you to right angles and in accurate manner.

4. Router

This important tool must be present in every wood shop as it helps you to create various different wood accessories. A router can really help you to give a professional look to any project that you are working on.

Bought a sewing machine, clean it up or cut it up?

I just purchased this sewing machine and am picking it up in the morning. I ended up paying $100 dollars for it. My original plan was to pull out the actual sewing machine and the foot press, and mount the cabinet on my wall for a computer desk. However, when I saw it in person it looks beautiful and like it might be very old and possibly worth more than I payed. I obviously won’t have serial numbers or manufacture years until I pick it up, so maybe I need to wait until then. Just wanted to see if anyone had any input on whether I should cut it up or clean it up. Thanks!

It’s a rusty old Singer treadle, and probably worth about what you paid for it. If you refurbish it a bit (talk to the fine folks at the yahoo group “wefixit” — there’s a nice section in the files portion of the group on restoring old machines cosmetically), you may be able to sell it for more than you paid.
And learning to fix up old machines is a nice, useful hobby. A number of people I know buy them for $5-10 for their “puzzle value”, get them fixed up and give them to folks who need a sewing machine.

If you just want an old sewing machine cabinet, no head or treadle, talk to the local sewing machine repair shops and ask them to save you one. Cabinet machines are long out of fashion and mostly when they come in on trade in, the cabinets just get junked and the machine parted out.
