here is one person’s experience with Makit & Bakit:

It is actually a very simple craft to complete and it turns out looking so nice!

First you put the crystals in the pie plates. You can pour directly from the bag but we chose to put the crystals into disposable cups first. My daughter added pinches of a color at a time rather than pouring to avoid over-pouring. You continue to add crystals until the pie plate is filled 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch deep. You can make designs or just add crystals randomly. My daughter did both and they both turned out beautifully.

The next step is to place the filled pie plate onto a baking sheet and bake in a 375F oven for 15-20 minutes. An adult should help and supervise when using the oven! We found that it took 20 minutes for one and 25 minutes for another creation that my daughter made. I think the one that took longer was a bit thicker. You will probably smell a funny odor while baking and the directions mention that this is normal and harmless.

After baking, you will need to cool the plastic for at least 15 minutes. The next step is where you make your disk into a bowl. You take the aluminum strip and roll it into a circle. Then place some aluminum foil over the top of the circle, bending as much or as little as you’d like. Put the disk on top of this and bake another 3-5 minutes. The sides of the disk will droop and when you turn it right side up, it’s a bowl!

The completed bowls can then be used for candy, jewelry, accessories, etc. They make nice gifts as they really are beautiful. They are not dishwasher safe, however!

Our experiences
I was happily surprised by this project. My daughter was able to complete the crafting parts on her own and only needed help using the oven. She even was able to form the aluminum foil on the circle by herself to make the bowl the shape that she was looking for. She wanted her bowl to be deeper than the first bowl that I had crafted so she figured out how to bend the foil in a different way than I had to achieve this goal. I was really impressed with that feat!

During the time that my daughter was working on these bowls, she did learn that you do have to put the beads on pretty thick. Otherwise you wind up with holes in your bowl. You especially have to be careful when you have two different colors meeting each other that they are thick at the joining parts so that there are not holes between colors. I took a finger and smoothed the crystals for my daughter just before putting them in the oven. The first bowl she made did have some small holes but she learned from that experience and subsequent bowl were much better. Nonetheless, the bowl with holes had only very small holes and was still good for holding hard candies and jewelry on her dresser.

My daughter has used her bowls for several different things now. She used them at a holiday celebration to put wrapped candies in. She put them in different parts of the house and everyone commented on my colorful bowls. When I told people that my daughter had made them, they were very impressed and sought her out to tell her so. They wanted to know how she did them and were amazed at how simple it sounded.

I would like to buy my daughter another kit so that she could make some bowls for holiday gifts for next year (I know, I am a planner….I thrive for planning ahead!). I am going to be on the look out for another kit like this one. I have found it on Amazon for $12.99 but I’m going to wait until I either see it in a brick and mortar store or else until I have other things to order from Amazon so I don’t have to pay shipping. I’d imagine that craft stores will carry this product and I’m going to search them out.

Recommendations
I really recommend this kit. I can see why it says for ages 8 and up because it does take some control to keep the plastic crystals from going absolutely everywhere but otherwise, it really is a fairly easy craft and one that can be very successful! I think any child who is old enough and has just a bit of patience will enjoy and succeed with this craft kit. I know my daughter would be the first to highly recommend it as she was even impressed with the bowls that she made!
