There are endless options and choices in today’s modern computerized machines, and deciding on a new one can be daunting. If you plan to use your sewing machine to make quilts there are even more features you will need to consider. A sewing machine that will handle quilting is an expensive purchase, sometimes as much as a home appliance so do your homework to ensure you will be happy with your choice for years to some. Here are some steps you can take to select the best machine for your needs.

First, decide what you will use the sewing machine for. Will you be doing more than quilting? Will you also be making clothes, sewing home decorations such as drapes and curtains, monogramming projects, or embroidery? Make a list of the features you need for each type of sewing and take it with you to a sewing center to try out some machines. While you are testing the products, ask to sew on fabric with different weights. Remember quilts will have several fabric layers and it is important that your new machine be able to handle the thickness. Try out a few and narrow down the options you can’t live without. Try to get the best sewing machine you can possibly afford because it will likely need to last a long time.

Machine quilters typically like to do free motion stitches, which requires the feed dogs to be retractable so make sure they can be lowered easily. Quilts take up a lot of space so find a sewing machine that has a large area between the arm and base (called the throat area). Also get an extended table attachment so the weight of a quilt doesn’t drag it off the machine. Another nice feature is a knee lever to raise the presser foot. This allows you to keep your hands on the fabric at all times.

Some automated features to look for are an automatic needle threader, thread cutter, bobbin winder, auto adjustments for light and heavy fabrics, a thread holder that accommodates large cone threads, and an assortment of presser feet including those specific to quilting. If the machine you are considering has a variety of stitches, test them out and ask what each is used for. The more stitches available on a sewing machine, the more it will cost. Try to find a happy medium that you can live with.

There are many companies that make sewing machines for quilting. Try to compare the features on different brands and compare the warranties. Also find out if they can be serviced locally. Keeping a quilting machine tuned up prevents costly repairs, and you will want a service center that’s convenient to you.

I have an old sewing machine table, does anyone know how I could get a new sewing machine to fit in it?

Ok as I said above in the question I have an old sewing machine table that I want to be able to put a new sewing machine in. I don’t know if its possible of it theres anything out there that is like a kit or something to make it easier or if I am just going to have to make something myself. Below is a link to a picture of the table.

I suspect this is something you need to do yourself – especially if the cut out is for a different brand of machine. I should imagine they are fairly easy to adapt – you need to look carefully at the design of the base to see how it will fit – this may be a job for a cabinet maker as I expect it has to be fairly accurateley done so as not to affect how everything folds.
